What Happened
Getting patents in multiple countries is slow and expensive. The Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) offers a shortcut: if one patent office says your claims are allowable, other participating offices will fast-track examination of corresponding claims.
Why It Matters
Here's how it works: You file a patent application in the U.S. (or any participating country). When the examiner says some claims are allowable, you can request PPH for your corresponding applications in other countries. Those applications jump to the front of the queue and get examined faster, often with fewer rejections.
Over 50 patent offices participate, including the U.S., Europe, Japan, China, and Korea. The program has been around for years but keeps expanding.
For companies filing internationally, PPH can cut years off prosecution time and save significant legal fees. Instead of fighting the same battle in five different countries, you get one examination that others respect.
But there are limits. PPH doesn't guarantee allowance—each office makes its own decision. And you can't use it until you have allowable claims somewhere, which means you need at least one application to mature first.

If you're filing internationally, consider PPH from the start. Choose a lead application strategically—file first in an office with fast, quality examination. Then use those results to accelerate other filings.
